EXCLUSIVE: All change at BNY Mellon with a series of senior departures

BNY Mellon has seen an exodus of senior leaders in recent weeks, BEST EXECUTION can reveal – with key figures including Mike Horan, Dan Watkins and Paul Matherne all departing, allegedly as part of a broader restructuring of the firm’s trading function. 

Dan Watkins

Dan Watkins, head of markets EMEA, left the firm in February to “pursue other opportunities,” BNY Mellon confirmed to BEST EXECUTION. .

His role has been taken over by Nelius De Groot, who is now head of markets international, overseeing EMEA and APAC regions. De Groot is based in Singapore and joined BNY Mellon in 2023.

Paul Matherne

Paul Matherne, global head of FX trading and co-head of markets EMEA, left the firm in January, BEST EXECUTION can also confirm.

Matherne was formerly with Deutsche Bank, before joining BNY Mellon in 2016 as global head of FX forwards.

Michael Horan

Mike Horan, head of equity trading at BNY Mellon EMEA and head of outsourced trading for BNY Mellon Pershing EMEA – and a longstanding legend within the outsourced trading space – also recently left BNY Mellon to pursue other opportunities, BEST EXECUTION understands.

Horan joined BNY Mellon in 2004, prior to which he was head of the European broker desk at Instinet.

BNY Mellon recently made a number of new hires, including ex-RBC Bianca Gould, who was appointed head of fixed income and equities EMEA.
