There is no doubt that the world of equity trading has become more difficult over the past ten years. Volumes and commissions are down and it is unlikely that they will recover their pre-financial crisis hue anytime soon. Adding fuel to the fire is a raft of regulation such as the financial transaction tax. Investment banks and brokerage firms have been forced to restructure their equity franchises but institutional as well as retail investors have also had to re-think their strategies.
