Dr Robert Barnes set to leave LSEG at the end of the year

Dr Robert Barnes, group head of securities trading at London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) responsible and CEO of Turquoise, is set to leave at the end of this year.

His next job and replacement have not been disclosed.

Dr Barnes is a leading light and well respected figure on the financial service landscape. He  is not only known as a lifelong champion of listening to customers but also for innovation in partnership to achieve greater market efficiencies on a global scale.

Dr Barnes joined LSEG in 2013 as CEO of Turquoise Global Holdings and added to his responsibilities those of global head of primary markets at LSEG from 2016 until end of 2020 when the exchange announced its divestment of Borsa Italiana to complete its merger with Refinitiv.

LSEG then appointed Dr Barnes as group head of securities trading.

He oversaw the expansion of Turquoise which included the alliance with Plato Partnership which rebranded its non-displayed services as Turquoise Plato,

As of July 2022,  participants have traded more than €1.3 trillion of equities and continue to set new records seeing the average daily turnover increase by over 684%, as of May 2022, including €577.2 billion via Turquoise Plato Block Discovery alone.

Dr Barnes started his financial career at UBS in 1994 and has extensive and varied experience of leading business and providing strategic direction, having become a managing director, equities, by 2005 and in 2010 became founding CEO of UBS MTF which grew to #1 among peers

He also participated as an invited member of the European Commission Directorate General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union in 2019 that led to the Study on Primary and Secondary Equity Markets in the European Union published in 2020 that cites from his articles and interviews.

In addition, he sat on the Securities Trading Committee for the London Investment Banking Association, serving as chairman from 2004-2009.
